VP Land and Operations
Mr. Unruh joined Payson Petroleum in 2015 as VP of Land and Operations, he is a Certified Professional Landman and has a reputation for integrity and attention to detail along with a multi-faceted base of knowledge and experience related to land management, due diligence, drilling preparation and drilling and production operations.
From May 2003 until May 2007, Mr. Unruh was Vice President of Mesa Energy, Inc. During that period, he was responsible for the land and pipeline activities of the company including mineral leasing, title work, contract negotiation, due diligence, leasehold management, pooling, regulatory compliance, drilling prospect analysis as well as pipeline right-of-way acquisition and construction, negotiation of surface use agreements, permitting, materials and labor bidding and vendor and contractor management. He assisted in day-to-day corporate operations, participated in the corporate strategic planning process and helped facilitate taking the company public in 2006.
In May of 2007, Mr. Unruh left the oil and gas industry to become President and Owner of Shiloh Homes, LLC. During the period from May 2007 until December 2010, Mr. Unruh built a number of single family homes and commercial buildings.
In January 2011, Mr. Unruh returned to the oil and gas industry, becoming an Area Manager / Right-of-way Agent for Percheron Acquisitions, LLC. From January 2011 until February 2012, he managed the acquisition and construction of five midstream gathering systems in the Eagleford Shale play for Pioneer Natural Resources including midstream facility and flowline strategic planning, right-of-way acquisition, negotiation of surface use agreements, supervision of right-of-way agents, oversight of right-of-way clearing and pipeline construction.
In February 2012, Mr. Unruh returned to Mesa Energy, Inc. as Executive Vice President – Land and Operations. In March 2013, Mesa merged with Armada Oil, Inc. and Mr. Unruh became Chief Operating Officer of the merged company. During this period, he helped facilitate the successful merger of two public companies and the divesture of a wholly-owned subsidiary and supervised land related activities in numerous states including Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Wyoming, Louisiana, and New York. He was responsible for field operations including the company’s interaction with and management of contract landmen, geologists, engineers, title attorneys, pumpers, well tenders, drilling contractors and vendors during drilling and production operations and negotiated numerous types of industry agreements related to field operations and the acquisition, exploration, development and divesture of company properties.
Mr. Unruh holds a Bachelors of Business Administration in Finance from Texas A&M University and a Certificate in Professional Land Management from the University of Houston. He is a member of the American Association of Professional Landmen, the Dallas Association of Petroleum Landmen, and the Independent Petroleum Association of America. Mr. Unruh and his wife, Shannon, have been married for 10 years and have two daughters, Esther and Abigail.
